What is Gestational Diabetes?
Gestational Diabetes is a type of diabetes that many women get during pregnancy. It has been observed that 2 to 10 percent of expectant mothers develop this condition, making it one of the most common health problems during pregnancy. Gestational Diabetes is really a critical issue if not handled properly. We understand that it is very difficult to control your blood sugar during pregnancy but it is very important to control it to have a healthy baby.
Will Gestational Diabetes affect my baby’s health?
If one have great control over gestational diabetes then in most of the cases baby will be fine. But there are some chances to have some issues if you don’t have proper management of high sugar levels during pregnancy. If you have high blood sugar then problem may arise with the baby because it can pass to the baby through the placenta.

Breast milk is good in case of low blood sugar
Hypoglycemia or low blood sugar immediately after birth can be controlled by monitoring and giving insulin as required. It is also suggested to feed (preferably breast milk) baby as soon as possible to avoid low blood sugar levels.
Baby may have under developed lungs
Babies also have increased risk of breathing problem at the time of birth. Due to diabetics sometimes babies are delivered pre term and their lungs are not developed properly. The lungs of babies whose mothers have diabetes tend to mature a bit later too.
Due to uncontrolled gestational diabetes baby size increased in the womb, due to which chances to Cesarean-section increased. In some cases during delivery due to increased size of baby bone fractured or nerve damaged can happen, which is cured in 99% of cases.
Mother can also have issues due to gestational diabetes
Mother also faces some issues due to gestational diabetes if not controlled very well. These problems are as follows:
- Increased baby size so increased chances of Cesarean-section
- Still born baby
- Injury during delivery
- Pre term birth
- High blood pressure or preeclampsia
- Higher risk of developingtype 2 diabetes
