What is Pre-diabetes?
Our body requires glucose to produce energy to function, like heart beating, muscles pumping etc. This glucose formed by simple sugar or carbohydrates that we eat. High blood sugar is harmful for our kidney ad all other organs. Pre diabetic is a stage when you have your blood sugar levels higher than normal range but lower than diabetic range. High blood sugar also known as hyperglycemia is a condition when your pancreas produces insufficient insulin or reduced insulin sensitivity.
Am I Pre-diabetic?
Before being diabetic people have pre-diabetes. It is a condition where you are at a higher risk for developing type 2 diabetes. You are pre-diabetic if you have your sugar levels above the normal range and below the diabetes range. Sometimes you may observe some symptoms but this is not necessary that you found them. Possible symptoms of pre-diabetes are-
- Darken skin color
- Frequent urination
- Increased thirst
- Blurred vision
You can get confirmation after these tests. These are blood tests and can be done easily in all pathology labs.
How to test?
There are several ways to check blood sugar level, but you need to repeat it frequently to diagnose diabetes.

What are the risk factors?
Obviously as we all know pre-diabetic person has more change to be diabetic of type 2 in near future. If you don’t have any other health issue then there is no other risk in being pre diabetic. The good news is pre-diabetes can be an opportunity for you to improve your health. You only have to change your life style. Diabetes itself is a big health issue especially in early age. You will have to be very careful about your diet or calories intake. So it is very much advisable to prevent yourself from being diabetic.
What to do now?
One can say ‘nothing’. But it is partially true if you go for medicines. To go back from pre diabetic stage to normal stage or at least to prevent yourself from being diabetic you should take care of your diet, workout and weight all. You should increase to work out to make your pancreas work active to produce more insulin. You should cut your calories and fat increase fiber in your diet and maintain an ideal weight. You should take more fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Initially when you stop taking sugar in your diet you may feel strong sugar cravings, try to satisfy this by taking some juicy fruit. Lighter body works well in managing sugar. If you can’t get your ideal weight you should try to lose at least 7% of your weight. BMI 25 or lesser is good for pre-diabetic.
Morning walk is the best workout of pre-diabetes. You should take half an hour brisk walk daily, it is very beneficial and prevent you from being diabetic.
How to prevent from being pre-diabetic?
You can also prevent yourself from being pre-diabetic by adopting a healthy life style. Regular walk, healthy diet, exercise, ideal weight make you healthy in all aspects and reduce the chances of being pre-diabetic.
